The death of President Kennedy was the defining moment in history the same number of felt he and his family was American sovereignty, he had the capacity to arrive at Americans through his discourses, as it helped Americans through some unpleasant occasions in chilly war history, he was an impetus in permitting Americans to be a piece of history from the primary stroll on the moon and the equity of every single human right in the United States. One of his most popular maxims and what revitalized such a significant number of Americans behind President Kennedy: â€Å"And so my individual Americans†¦ ask not what your nation can accomplish for you†¦ approach what you can accomplish for your nation. My kindred residents of the world†¦ approach not what America will accomplish for you, however what together we can accomplish for the opportunity of man. † On November 22, 1963, only three weeks after Diem’s death in Saigon, President Kennedy was killed in Dallas. VP Lyndon B. Johnson was sworn into office, kept Kennedy’s key Vietnam counsels set up, and vowed, â€Å"Let us proceed. † The United States would before long be well past the final turning point in Vietnam. For President Johnson, it was exceptionally hard to deny his predecessors’ heritage in Vietnam, particularly the reality he was not chosen yet became President as a matter of course because of the demise of President Kennedy. Johnson and his organization felt constrained to raise the U. S. inclusion as an ever increasing number of Americans were getting progressively helpless against the Vietcong assaults. On May 4, 1964, an exchange ban was forced on North Vietnam, this in actuality was a remarkable venturing up of threats. Some would state exchange embargoes can be more compelling than the genuine specialty of war. In any case, much of the time these exchange embargoes are the impetus for inception of war, in this such case with the Vietnam War. In 1965, Johnson started sending ground troops into Vietnam, starting here on the Vietnam War was nicknamed â€Å"Johnson’s war. † Johnson additionally felt it important to proceed with the war just to respect the other three Presidents who were related with this war (Truman, Eisenhower, and Kennedy) he felt an exit from this war would have harmed the US believability as an enemy of Communist superpower. A few history specialists trust Kennedy had a chance to remove the US from Vietnam in 1963. In any case, Johnson felt that when the Kennedy organization plotted in the harvest time of 1963 the upset against Diem, the US had the ethical duty in the responsibility to Vietnam expanded since the US helped evacuated one of South Vietnamese pioneers, the US had a much more noteworthy explanation and commitment to help the following Democratic replacement. It is likewise said by certain students of history that despite the fact that President Kennedy may have had a chance to escape Vietnam in 1963, there is no reasonable point where that would have been plausible as the US had contributed about a time of money related guide, men and materials in the Saigon system when of Kennedy’s end. The Tet Offensive overwhelmed Americans, the significant goals had been to drive a wedge between the Americans and the South Vietnamese. The Tet Offensive was the genuine defining moment for US contribution in the Vietnam War, it was the impetus for Nixon’s crusade to bring troops back home and pulling out of the war.

A Marxist Reading of Native Son Essays -- Native Son Essays

A Marxist Reading of Native Son In the Communist Manifesto Karl Marx states obviously that history is a progression of class battles over the methods for creation. Whoever controls the methods for creation additionally controls society and can compel their arrangement of thoughts and convictions onto the lower class. The current predominant class philosophy is, as it has been since the composition of the United States Constitution, the belief system of the privileged, Anglo-Saxon male. Clearly, when the designers talked about fairness for all, they implied for all land-possessing white men. The expressions of the Declaration of Independence, additionally composed by high society, Anglo-American guys, are clear: life, freedom, and the quest for joy are rights important to every individual and ought to never be removed. Governments are set up to ensure these rights, yet these rights don't make a difference to everybody, especially to the Bigger Thomases of the world. In spite of the fact that the composers of the Constitution and the creators of the Declaration of Independence couldn't investigate the future to see the appearance of Richard Wright, his 1940 novel, Native Son, with its fundamental character, Bigger Thomas, or the disappointed urban young people whom Bigger was designed after, they knew their own needs. They additionally comprehended the significance of being allowed to achieve those requirements. A long time later, Abraham Maslow concurred with the progenitors and gave the hypothesis of necessities a name. In 1943, clinician Abraham Maslow built up a hypothesis of fundamental human needs: Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs. His hypothesis proposes that installed in the very idea of every individual are sure needs that must be achieved all together for an individual to be entire genuinely, mentally, and inwardly. The Semester I Played With Chocolate and Ants for a Technical Class

The Semester I Played With Chocolate and Ants for a Technical Class There is a class here at MIT called How to Design (Almost) Anything- 4.141, where you apply the iterative design process throughout the semester to create an object and then turn the object into a vessel. For a tl;dr, heres the document I used to present my final project (edited for context) For the first half of this class, we had to take a creative process like weaving, knitting, or making chains, change the process to create a 3D object, and discover something new about the process. Some examples are here (slides 20-28). I was inspired by these chocolate balloon bowls, where you dip a balloon in melted chocolate and pop the balloon when the chocolate is set, but  I wanted to somehow constrain the balloons to be amorphous or irregular I had to first figure out how I would constrain the balloon. I tried thin strips of duct tape, but the irregularities werent pronounced enough. I followed this  tutorial for making stress balls using slime and fishnets. The amount of slime I needed was way too much, and removing the slime after the chocolate step was going to be difficult. I tried fishnets- I needed to cut portions of the netting because the holes were too small for the balloon to squeeze through. I made a net using string, which gave me more control over the size of the holes, but the net-making process took way too long Heres some failed attempts with chocolate. The warm chocolate had slightly melted the balloon so the chocolate and the balloon got stuck together. I found this video on how to make balloon bowls using sugar syrup, which is way hotter than melted chocolate. The trick to keeping the balloon from melting was to fill the balloon with water to absorb the heat (higher specific heat). I also coated the balloon and fishnets with cooking spray to help it release and I dipped the balloons multiple times to get a thicker shell. My friend Pete  got the idea to put multiple inflated water balloons inside of a normal balloon, and then use a metal straw to suck the air out of the normal balloon to make the normal balloon contour to the shape of the water balloons The two methods made very different shapes and I made a few of each type: An arrow pointing right Previous An arrow pointing right Next I love that the shells looked kind of grotesque, evoking ideas of insect larvae or aliens, but were made of something so delicious. The second half of this class had us turn our object and into a vessel tailored specifically to hold a medium (like water or sand). My object was already kind of a vessel, but I still needed to choose a medium and change the bowl to fit the mediums needs. Of course, I chose insects. My friend Anna has pet bearded dragons so she keeps live worms in her room. I really wanted to see them burrow through chocolate, but because of health/animal rights reasons I was only allowed to use the ants living in East Campus. The worms looked really cool when I put them in the chocolate just for photos (warning for worm imagery) If ants could do the labor of making complex structures for me, I would provide shelter or food for them, resulting in a symbiotic relationship. In order to make these structures more interesting, I wanted multiple separate layers for the ants to explore. I tried making concentric bowls by cutting them in half using a hot knife and sealing the bowls back up inside each other with melted chocolate. This wasnt very elegant because of the visible seam after gluing the halves back together. I decided to use alternating layers of chocolate and plaster, where the plaster layers would only cover half of the balloon, and I would rotate the balloon so the location of the plaster-half would be different each time. So by the time I figured all of this out, the weather had gotten warm and the ants stopped coming inside. I needed a way to simulate the disintegration of the chocolate I used a pipette and hot water to melt patches of the chocolate, imagining how the ants would create paths and patches in the chocolate while being unable to eat through the plaster. Word Versus LaTex Word Processing Stand-off

Those familiar with using word processing software may know that it replaced the typewriter, which in a way it certainly did. Back in the day, there were manual typewriters, and then electric typewriters replaced later by electric word processor machines and duplicating machines. But back when typewriters were more prevalent, there was also something in the publishing industry called typesetting. Books, newspapers, and magazines used to have to be â€Å"typeset† by hand. In fact, they were hand set just one letter and one space at a time. News reporters were always under a deadline. They had to get the story to the typesetter with enough time left to do the typesetting and copies printed and ready for morning delivery. So, in this article, we’ll compare Word versus LaTex but to better understand how these two programs are different, a little refresher on publishing before computers came along is in order. Here’s how that old saying â€Å"STOP THE PRESSES!† came about: Hand Type Setting If you’ve ever heard the term â€Å"m-space or â€Å"n-space,† those terms came from the time when typesetting was done manually. So, after hand typesetting each letter in the story, along with headlines, etc. and filling what was called the â€Å"chase,† with the typeset, you locked it all into place using wooden blocks and a â€Å"quoin† lock. Next, the chase went into the press or platen, and the printing began. It was a very tedious process, typesetters were highly skilled, and errors were a HUGE deal because it meant entire pages had to be manually redone. Hot Metal Typesetting With the onset of the 19th century, typesetting made a giant leap forward to hot metal typesetting. With the help of a â€Å"Keyboard,† which was more like a typewriter then, the typesetter produced the text of the story. It was faster but still tedious. Then the Linotype machine, invented by Ottmar Mergenthaler, came onto the scene in 1884. The Linotype machine could produce a complete line of type at one time using â€Å"casting matrices† rather than just one letter or space at a time. The casting matices were more like molds for entire lines of text and could work two or three times as fast as a hand typesetter. The process still used a chase and quoin lock, but the entire letter by letter labor process was circumvented. Phototypesetting Hot metal and Linotype machines served the publishing industry well into the mid-1900’s when phototypesetting revolutionized the world of publishing. Linotype and hot metal printing machines were no longer needed. Phototypesetting involved thick plastic or glass discs with the fonts you wanted to use. With this process, switching fonts became as easy as replacing one disc or strip, with a new one. It was still a highly skilled industry, but it was even faster with this automation. Desktop Publishing In the early 1980’s, Apple Macintosh was launched, and typesetting was gradually edged out by desktop publishing programs such as Quark Express and PageMaker. Typesetters became or in some cases moved on and made way for graphic artists who designed pages on the computer. Not long after that, in the Fall of 1983, Multi-Tool for Word which would later become Microsoft Word was invented, and it quickly began to edge out word processing machines. Today, there are children alive in the world who won’t remember a typewriter or a typesetting machine, which makes you wonder a little, what form of publishing tools could replace computers in the future? Word versus LaTex: What’s the Difference? When it comes to Word versus LaTex (pronounced LaTech), think of Word as the modern version of a manual typewriter and Latex as the modern version of manual typesetting from so long ago. MS Word is software designed to help writers get words on the page and formatted easily, and the outcome is a WYSIWYG (What You See is What You Get) view of your document. With MS Word software, just like with those old manual typewriters, writers don’t have to understand why clicking this button (or key) tells Word to italicize or bold the highlighted word, it just does it. Like typewriters did, the WYSIWYG view makes word processing more accessible to everyone without the steep learning curve that is involved in computer programming or was involved with typesetting. A similar metamorphosis has happened to typeset with LaTex. What is LaTex and How Is It Used? LaTex is not a word processing software; it’s the content side of a document preparation system. The foundation for LaTex is on coding called TeX. Formatting and the layout of pages were done in TeX first. But it uses plain text (not formatted) and â€Å"markup† tagging standards to design the basic structure of a document whether it be a letter, book, or article. Users don’t need to know TeX which is more complex programming, to create a complex document using LaTex. LaTex helps academic writers because it already contains the macros for things such as section and chapter headings, graphics insertion, bibliographies, cross-referencing figures and tables, and indexing. It began as a writing resource for computer scientists and mathematicians. LaTex spread quickly to other scholars who had a need to include complex language text or math expressions into their documents. LaTex is in a way like computerized typesetting. It’s helpful in books and materials that contain text that is multilingual such as Greek, Tamil, or Sanskrit. It’s primarily used in publications in academia. Areas of academia where a document preparation program like LaTex is used are chemistry, mathematics, computer science, engineering, political science, physics, economics, and quantitative psychology. Word Versus LaTex for Writers So, most writers, especially those writing novels, will be better served by using Microsoft Word or a similar word processor to write their story, article, or blog post. But if you are a writer who primarily writes for academia or who intends to publish in the future in one of the departments mentioned above, then you may want to give LaTex a test drive sooner than later.

Hamlet Essay example - 1013 Words

Hamlet William Shakespeare composed the play Hamlet, around 1600-1601. This play, named after his only son, in my opinion is one of Shakespeare’s best works. The play shows the literal as well as the realistic sides of people during this culture as well as those generations to come. During the play, Hamlet’s character went through several different transitions. In the beginning he was shown as a child, by his actions and curiosity, but towards the end of play his manhood begins surface and he begins to be aggressive at getting what he wants. Hamlet is full of mysterious relationships. I truly believe that Gertrude may not have been apart of the killing of her late husband Hamlet Sr. but she seems like the type of female who has no opinion or say so of her own. During the scene where Hamlet and Laertes fight in Ophelia’s grave, death is the charge to show who loved Ophelia the most. Instead of stopping the fight and telling Hamlet to regain his senses and that Laertes is Ophelia’s brother she stands there and does nothing. I believe that Gertrude was a poor excuse for a mother in this play, because she made everything center around her new king instead of her own child. Hamlet say’s: I have heard of your paintings too well enough God has given you one face and you make yourselves another: you jig, you amble, and you lisp, and nickname Gods creatures and make your wantonness your ignorance. Biography of James K. Polk, 11th US President

James K. Polk was president during the Mexican American War and the era of Manifest Destiny. Learn more about the 11th president of the United States. James K. Polks Childhood and Education James K. Polk was born on November 2, 1795, in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. He moved with his family at the age of ten to Tennessee. He was a sickly youth who suffered from gallstones. Polk did not begin his formal education until 1813 at the age of 18. By 1816, he entered the University of North Carolina and graduated with honors in 1818. He decided to enter politics and also was admitted to the bar. Family Ties Polks father was Samuel, a planter and landowner who was also a friend of  Andrew Jackson. His mother was  Jane Knox. They had been married on Christmas Day in 1794. His mother was a staunch Presbyterian. He had five brothers and four sisters, many of whom died young. On January 1, 1824, Polk married Sarah Childress. She was  well-educated and wealthy. While first lady, she banned dancing and liquor from the White House. Together, they had no children. James K. Polks Career Before the Presidency Polk had focused on politics his whole life. He was a member of the Tennessee House of Representatives (1823-25). From 1825-39, he was a member of the U.S. House of Representatives including serving as its speaker from 1835-39. He was a great ally and supporter of Andrew Jackson. From 1839-41, Polk became Governor of Tennessee. Becoming President In 1844, the Democrats were having a difficult time getting the necessary 2/3 of the vote to nominate a candidate. On the 9th ballot, James K. Polk who had only been considered as a Vice Presidential candidate was nominated. He was the first dark-horse nominee. He was opposed by Whig candidate Henry Clay. The campaign centered around the idea of annexation of Texas which Polk supported and Clay opposed. Polk received 50% of the popular vote and won 170 out of 275 electoral votes. Events and Accomplishments as President James K. Polks  time in office was eventful. In 1846, he agreed to fix the boundary of the Oregon territory at the 49th parallel. Great Britain and the United States disagreed about who claimed the territory. The Oregon Treaty meant that Washington and  Oregon  would be a territory of the U.S. and Vancouver would belong to Great Britain. Much of Polks time in office was taken up with the  Mexican War  which lasted from 1846-1848. The annexation of Texas which had taken place at the end of  John Tylers time in office hurt relations between Mexico and America. Further, the border between the two countries was still disputed. The U.S. felt that the border should be set at the Rio Grande River. When Mexico would not agree, Polk prepared for war. He ordered General  Zachary Taylor  to the area. In April 1846, Mexican troops fired on the U.S. troops in the area. Polk used this to push forward a Declaration of War against Mexico. In February 1847, Taylor was able to defeat the Mexican army led by  Santa Anna. By March 1847, U.S. troops occupied Mexico City. Concurrently in January 1847, Mexican troops were defeated in California. In February 1848, the  Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo  was signed  ending the war. By this treaty, the border was fixed at the Rio Grande. By this means, the U.S. gained California and Nevada amongst other present-day territories amounting to over 500,000 square miles of land. In exchange, the U.S. agreed to pay Mexico $15 million for the territory. This agreement reduced the size of Mexico to half of its former size. Post Presidential Period Polk had announced before taking office that he would not seek a second term. He did retire at the end of his term. However, he did not live much past that date. He died only three months later, possibly from Cholera. Historical Significance After Thomas Jefferson, James K. Polk increased the size of the United States more than any other president through the acquisition of California and New Mexico as a result of the Mexican-American War. He also claimed Oregon Territory after a treaty with England. He was a key figure in Manifest Destiny. He was also an extremely effective leader during the Mexican-American War. He is considered to be the best one-term president.

My Family Unspoken Rules Of Sexual Behavior And Parental...

For this activity, I examined my families’ spoken and unspoken rules and their ideas about sexual behaviors. These instructions include rules of sexuality in both public and the private. In every household, rules are varied depending on the family’s background, ethnicity, belief, and personal/cultural value. While many instructions are being established within our home, there are also the unspoken rules that each member of the family must obey. The unspoken family rules are the expectations from the parents to their children which were not spoken in the home but would be expected to follow. This paper will discuss my family unspoken rules of sexual behavior and the parental view of sexuality. I will explain how the cultural changes within my family over the past years has influenced my parent’s ideas on sexuality and how it affected their expectation for gender roles. The public and private rules of sexual behavior within my family will also be discussed. In addition, I will share my thoughts on what I believe a healthy sexuality is and my Christian viewpoints regarding of this topic. Human sexuality is a crucial part of human life, but many children are forbidden to explore in sexual activity with their parents. Parents have difference views about sex than their children because both are from the different generation. A man scurried by heading home holding a dead dog he had found determined not to share it with anyone. Lawrence passed makeshift shelters of countless homeless who cluttered the streets in every direction. Tents and cardboard lean-tos filled every available vacant lot. A retarded hunchback devil was appointed to beat a gong to mark every passing hour that brought them closer to their full consummation. Diane came from the car to face him. When he put his arms out to her, she stopped and pulled away. Diane, I want you to come with me. I want you to marry me and live in Jerusalem where you will be safe. Marry you! Are you crazy? What are you doing here anyway? Wouldnt you be happier destroying a nation of people in the name of holiness? Look at what you have done to this country. Look at what you have done to this city. Half the people are dead, and the other half wish they were dead, and you want me to marry you. I think you are crazy! Plain crazy! She started for the door. Earlier Windows versions scatter this information across the network making it harder for people to find it but the Active Directory brings it all together. This will allow personal and corporate computer users to get work done quicker and more suitable for what they are doing. Windows 2000 will include support for a smart card that will let only one person access certain files, which they have blocked off. Windows will decrypt your files only after you have provided both your smart card and private key. Removing the smart card from the slot locks the system and the only way back in is with the same smart card. This will be used in many corporate networks throughout the world to provide safety and security. In conclusion, the future of Windows will only be the gateway for new management systems. Later on we will have computers that we will just speak to us and will hold up a conversation to accomplish projects and make using the computer easier but until then Windows 2000 will be there for us. Onsite Wastewater Management

Question: Discuss about the Onsite Wastewater Management. Answer: Introduction: Depending on the environmental situation and other pollution management conditions different technologies are considered for the onsite treatment (McLellan Corder, (2013). Different onsite treatment methods are used by the system developers such as septic tanks, intermittent sand filters, aerobic treatment units, nutrients removal systems and wastewater segregation and recycle systems. The advantages and disadvantages of the technologies and its brief descriptions are as follows: Wastewater segregation and recycle systems This is one of the most widely used technologies used to modify the quality of the wastewater. For the onsite treatment this processes are referred to as important components. This technology helps to remove massive rate of pollutants from the wastewater for make further treatment or disposal. For the selected natural materials the estimated phosphorus adsorption rate also differs. Implementation of mound system is very much helpful for onsite treatment. The mound system helps to mitigate the restriction of sites. Media Adsorption rate Acid soil outwash 10-35 Calcareous soil outwash 5-30 Sandy soils 2-20 F-1 Alumina 700-1500 Over the centralized treatment plants the onsite treatment method has become one of the most widely used technologies. Onsite treatment also provides efficient sanitation process. After adaptation of this process, the users will be able to get services in a cost effective and timely manner. Membrane bio-reactor is a compact system that is much scalable to the future capacity. Even the maintenance cost and the system is completely automated. It can accept highest capacity load. In order to deliver the expected outcomes, high level operating training is needed. Even for the mixing process, higher energy is required. Higher energy for the treatment is required Due to the size of the system larger footprint and high level maintenance is needed that is quite expensive. Pretreatment technologies This is one of the most advanced technologies used for the onsite treatment. This advanced treatment step delivers to further for reducing solids and as well as FOG concentration in the wastewater. It also has the capability to reduce the possible nutrients concentrations. Two different ways might be used for developing the system efficiently. In a single processing tank there will be different separated tanks and the FOG and solids will be separated in those tanks. Before the drain field option and just after the septic tank, a separation component is located (Dutt King, 2014). In order to create an oxygenated environment, different aerobic treatment units are relied in the air injection units. Pros and cons of the technology In order to break down the organic materials this technology is found to be very much helpful as it supports bacterial population control system efficiently. In the aerobic portion the solids and the bacteria s can be settled down It also helps to develop additional treatment programs Clarification is referred to as another important part for the treatment rater for the onsite treatment. If non-absorbent materials are identified then, it will be harmful for the micro elements. If the media filter approach fails to meet the requirement of the onsite treatment development then, it will lead to major failure for the waste management system. Decentralized onsite wastewater technologies This is another technology that is widely used in the sustainable green infrastructure that protects the original source of the water quality and the public health at the same time. In United States and Canada most of the water most of the waste water is generated daily with the help of decentralized technology (Ouakibi et al., 2013). Comparatively than the sophisticated centralized wastewater treatment plant, onsite systems are capable to serve properly designed, installed and operated treatment. It provides outstanding treatment capabilities This is required to be considered as a permanent part for the infrastructure of the wastewater management system The installation and operation both are very must easier than other technologies Possible recycling approach is also available in this management system It needs less amount energy for moving the swage around the system Due to gravity flow collection no proper the soil absorption approach is not applicable and reliable at the same time. If proper and responsible operations are not used then it will lead to major failure and also for that reason the organic elements living in the soil will get harmed. For increasing complexity to single management framework was found to be efficient for developing the system. References Abdelaziz, A. E., Leite, G. B., Belhaj, M. A., Hallenbeck, P. C. (2014). Nightwish-Dark Passion Play free essay sample

Have you ever listened to a CD and been completely blown away and amazed? If you havent, listen to the most recent album by Finnish metal band Nightwish, entitled Dark Passion Play. Whether youre a headbanger following in the legacy of Slipknot, or someone looking for something reminiscent of Evanescence and Within Temptation, youll find something you like. This quintet consists of piano, drums, bass, guitar, and vocals. As well as an orchestra and choir numbering over 130. Nightwish features a female lead singer Anette Olzon, whose angelic voice is worthy to serenade God himself. And then theres Marco. Marco Hietala, bassist of the band, sings at least back up on every track on the album. And sometimes even lead. Marco can growl like a lion or croon like a dove, and still manage to look hardcore either way. With a beard to rival Santas, I personally think he should be one of the definitive metal icons of this time. We will write a custom essay sample on Nightwish-Dark Passion Play or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Anette is a stark contrast to the screams and growls of Marco, but still doesnt even seem remotely out of place on stage beside him. Whether shes singing the soft ballad Eva or enthralling listeners with the catchy lyrics of Amaranth, she doesnt disappoint. Shes a highly versatile singer, able to adapt and fit in with any song. The album itself is opened with a fourteen minute masterpiece, The Poet and The Pendulum. With lyrics from Anettes chorus: Get away/run away/fly away/lead me astray to dreamers hideaway, it slightly resembles a pop song. And then theres Marco. After one of the most awe-inspiring string solos youll ever hear, he sings loudly with a voice that can give the LISTENER a sore throat. Second robber to the right of Christ/Cut in half; infanticide, the first line of Marcos short vocal piece in the song paints a grisly image. But all too soon its over and back to Anette. The album continues in this epic, dramatic style with nary a weak song in the entire set. It builds up to Master Passion Greed, a goodbye to former singer Tarja that is anything but fond. This song is solely Marco singing, and The Islander very nearly is. Dark Passion Play is thirteen tracks long, and the first twelve build up to the dramatic ending, Meadows Of Heaven. With Anette singing, the beautiful lyrics could make stones weep. It also features a choir and solos that send shivers running down your spine each and every time you hear it. The DPP experience is enhanced by one thing, and one thing only: The Sound of Nightwish Reborn, an EP released in 2008. In addition to several orchestral versions and demos of songs, it features The Escapist, Reach, and While Your Lips Are Still Red. Three tracks that, for some unfathomable reason, didnt make it onto the record. Dark Passion Play. So much more than a CD. Just short of a miracle.

Casey Henderson Essays (2930 words) - Racism, Criticism Of Religion

Casey Henderson World History 20 th Century Dr. Biggs 2/16/15 Germany As world war one came to end a political transformation began to develop in Germany because universal suffrage was brought into their nation. Many characteristics after the First World War made Germany defenseless to people such as Hitler. Germany was a gory scene throughout the reign of Hitler and a very dark place heading into World War 2. The after math of the Second World War left Germany empty, defeated, and destroyed. Post both world wars left Germany at a depressive state but after World War 1 was the worst. Hitle r and his hatred for Jews caused Germany to become one of the scariest and most brutal eras a country has ever dealt with . The Treaty of Versailles forced Germany to pay France and Great Britain many reparations along with being forced to give up thirteen percent of their land. In an effort to recuperate from a brutal defeat after world war one Germany started modernizing gas works and power plants along with creating transportation projects. All these projects were put in place to decrease the unemployment rate. Germany's social spending rate was growing at a rapid pace as well as plummeting revenues which both were causing huge deficits. In 1930 the municipal finance took a fall which was caused by the budgets. Reparation payments could have still been made despite all Germanys financial issues but other countries made this not possible by placing protective tariffs on all of Germany's goods. Due to this , Germany was unable to sell goods in foreign countries where they could have made money to make these payments which further plummeted the economy. In desperation G ermany started to print out excessive amounts of cash which threw the country into super inflation. As the United States fell into depression they asked for the loans they had lent Germany and this mixed with every other problem, caused the German economy to b asically collapse . " By 1932 the German economy was a disaster. Unemployment was up to 6 million, German banks were put under government control, and there was an epidemic of German bankruptcies. " ( Germany' Authentic History) This shows the brutality that Germany faced post world war one and it's easy to see why the country was so desperate. This is when Hitler decided was the time to take power. His promise of bettering the economy and decreasing the unemployment rate was the reason so many followed him. In Adolf Hitler's speech on Mien Kampf in 1925 he says, " Was there any excrement, any shamelessness in any form, above all in cultural life, and in at least one Jew would not have been involved ." ( Kampf 61) Hitler's hatred for Jews is obvious and he believes that they are the soul problem for the economic fall throughout Germany. Placing the Jewish people in concentration camps was his idea of punishment and he believed that decreasing the Jewish people would help the economy because they were too wealthy. Following world war two was considered the reconstruction of Germany and it took a while. Germany suffered huge losses in industrial power and lives. Seven and a half million Germans had died which was around 10 percent of the population. Agricultural production was at an all-time low due to the severe bombings throughout the cities. The Potsdam Conference forced Germany to give 25 percent of their land to their allies. Many factories were destroyed in an effort to convert Germany into an agriculture nation. For the next two years following the German surrender the United States made big strides to start programs specializing in repairing scientific and technological savvy as well as exclusive rights throughout Germany . " Germany paid reparations to the United Kingdom, France, and the Soviet Union, mainly in the form of dismantled factories , forced labour , and coal. " ( Aftermath WW2, Wikipedia) Germany's allies were forcing these Germans to work hard as they should because this was their land for the time being and they defeated the Germans. In an effort to restore the destroyed country of Germany after World War 2 J.F. Byrnes the secretary

The long history of puppetry Essay Example

The long history of puppetry Essay Example The long history of puppetry Paper The long history of puppetry Paper Prehistoric miniature stone figures have been excavated in many places. We can only guess what they may have been used for. Scholars try to attach cultural or mystical significance to these finds. Storytelling and play acting with dolls are invented spontaneously by children the world over. The making of miniature figures is basic to human nature. It is a fair guess that the main use is simply entertainment. In the fifth century BC Herodotus writes about ancient figures operated by strings. Xenophon of Athens refers to a travelling Greek showman putting on a puppet show. These men did not discover something new, they were just early-published writers, and they wrote about what was happening. A 12th century woodcut shows two youngsters playing with figures of armed knights on strings. In a 14th century illuminated manuscript we see three girls watching a puppet show. It looks a lot like Punch and Judy. Theatrical scripts have often made fun of authority and the injustices of life. In societies where the authorities had more power than we nowadays give them they often reacted angrily to deserved ridicule. The Commedia dellarte was an improvised popular comedy in Italian theatres of the 16th to 18th century. It was frequently banned and was often performed on the streets. The characters Harlequin, Columbine and Pulcinella originated here. Italian performers exported their art throughout Europe and further afield. In the French language Pulcinella became Polichinelle, in Russian Petroushka, and in English Punch. They also invented the slapstick, a stick that has two small paddles at the end of it or is divided at one or both ends to make a noise when it hits anything. This is where we get the term slapstick comedy. Polichinelle was playing in France by 1630. Samuel Pepys was a civil servant who kept a diary. He wrote it for himself in his own private code but it was published after his death. It gives a fascinating personal view of 17th century England. In 1662 this diary records the first English mention of open-air puppet performances. Pepys writes that he watched the puppets a few times, once he stopped for a show in Hyde Park and it made him late for an appointment with the king. First known as Punch and Joan, the puppets became a popular diversion on beaches and in parks. The performers were often itinerants and were often mentioned in literature. As readers of Dickens the Old Curiosity Shop will know they were sometimes of not too respectable personality. Henry Fielding wrote his brilliantly satirical novel Tom Jones in the 18th century. There were concerns about violence in puppetry then as now. Tom Jones meets a travelling Punch and Judy man who claims to have cleaned up his show and made it into a moral and refined spectacle. The entertainer enjoys a couple of mugs of beer with the patrons of a wayside tavern and then physically assaults his assistant. Fielding has his hero comment that he much preferred the show in its old form. George Cruikshank, who made a name for himself by illustrating the writings of Charles Dickens was involved in the production of a book that preserved a street performance of a Punch and Judy show. Cruikshank and publisher John Payne Collier hired an Italian performer, Signor Piccini, to put on a private show in the Kings Arms, a tavern in Drury Lane, London. The show was stopped frequently so that Cruikshank could make drawings and Collier could record the dialogue. Both of these illustrations are by Cruikshank. Piccini may or may not have been an Italian. Then, as now, entertainers sometimes invented exotic names and backgrounds for themselves. He was a great puppeteer. He could have one of his puppets take off his hat with one hand, throw it to the other hand, and put it back on his head. Punch and Judy proliferated in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Shows were seen everywhere and some of the performers became prosperous.

Ageism in Nursing Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2250 words

Ageism in Nursing - Research Paper Example As the discussion declares the country identified to manifest the highest shares of aged population (those with citizens 60 years old and above) was Japan as of 2011 and projected way into 2050. Likewise, in addition to the challenges facing the size and quality of workforce who would be qualified and competent to address ageism, other challenges which were noted included addressing non-communicable diseases and pension issues, to name a few. From this paper it is clear that  the causes of ageism was expounded through identifying the factors that allegedly contributed to its perpetuation. It was noted that culture, media, language and the perception of old age have led to enforcement of stereotyped beliefs on the aged population. Among the language or colloqualist terms apparently associated with the older population are: â€Å""geezer," "old fogey," "old maid," "dirty old man," and "old goat"†. Other contributory factors to ageism that were identified include institutions (o rganizations which preclude aged people from being promoted or from being hired); a reported focus of the American health care system on acute care and cure, rather than practicing chronic care which is identified to be most needed by this segment of the population; and government policies that seem to skew regulations and benefits to other sectors more than to the elderly.  The negative stereotyped beliefs add to the dilemma and non-disclosure or dissemination of factual information on the aged population.... d in the study written by Bloom, Boersch-Supan, McGee, and Seike (2011) have disclosed some relevant findings, to wit: â€Å"while aging is taking place in almost all countries of the world, rich or poor, very high longevity is still a matter of very high income levels† (p. 4). In fact, the country identified to manifest the highest shares of aged population (those with citizens 60 years old and above) was Japan as of 2011 and projected way into 2050. Likewise, in addition to the challenges facing the size and quality of workforce who would be qualified and competent to address ageism, other challenges which were noted included addressing non-communicable diseases and pension issues, to name a few. Different studies have been conducted to closely examine relevant issues that pertain to ageing in contemporary times. Authors Kane and Kane (2005) have delved into disparities related to ageism between long-term care and acute care as well as issues related to age-based rationing. Another study by Nolan (2011) examined dimensions of ageing and belonging as well as the effects of ageism. The various challenges faced by health care practitioners in addressing diverse needs and health-related issues of the aged population were expounded by Bloom, Boersch-Supan, McGee, and Seike (2011). There were negative myths and stereotypes that were also apparently presented by Palmore (1990) which have been vividly clarified through presentation of facts on concerns such as illness, impotency, ugliness, mental decline, mental illness, uselessness, isolation, poverty, depression, and political power (Chapin, Nelson-Becker, Gordon, & Terrebonne, 2002). The causes of ageism was expounded through identifying the factors that allegedly contributed to its perpetuation. It was noted that culture,

Health and Science Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 6500 words

Health and Science - Essay Example of defense mechanism the person tries to repress any such undesirable feeling or thought or memory which causes any kind of mental turmoil to the person or which he wished not to have occurred ever. In this situation the person just wants to cut that portion of life away or just forget the situation. Hysterical amnesia is an example of this mechanism where a person performs or observes certain disturbing incident and then just forgets the incident and its surroundings. Repression is used in negative way when the person indulges in any harmful act and then forgets it. For example the person hurts or kills others at a certain state of mind or when finds others at a certain situation and then as soon as s/he is taken away from the situation or that particular state of mind s/he completely forgets the incident. Reaction formation is the kind of defense mechanism related to the fixation in consciousness of an idea or desire which is opposite to any unconscious fear. In this situation the person experiencing any conflict becomes obsessive with the situation either in positive or in negative manner. The person unconsciously tries to prove that s/he has completely accepted the situation which is opposite to her/his desire and in doing so s/he becomes over protective or solicitous to the situation. This may be expression of her/his internal guilt of not accepting the condition, e.g. an overprotective mother for her unwanted child. The negative reaction can be seen when this obsession affects the life of the child or others in a dangerous manner. Here the mother interferes too much in the life of the child and even hurts the child or anybody else who is trying to behave opposite to her obsession or notion. When a mother hurts the boyfriend of a girl child in order to keep him away from her daugh ter, it can serve as a negative reaction. Denial is the situation when a person consciously refuses to accept any painful incident. In this case the person tries to escape any

Development of Water-soluble Metal

Development of Water-soluble Metal Development of Water-soluble metal working fluids and study of their wear properties Chidambaram CT, L.A.Kumaraswamidhas, Suman Dutta* Abstract Metalworking chemistry evolved from simple oils to water-based technology. The tool life was extended by reducing wear by metal working fluids. This study shows parameters affecting on Wear Scar Diameters (WSD) with different water soluble metal working fluid having different mineral oil and phosphorous EP additive content. The optimum mineral oil and phosphorous EP additive content of this metal working fluid has been estimated using 2-level factorial design. The Mean Ware Scar Diameter (MWSD) is determined experimentally. The test is performed at specific speed, load and temperature adopting four balls tribology test method as per ASTM D4172 test procedure. The results from wear tester indicate the role of mineral oil content and mixture of EP additives. The lubricants with poor wear results possess excellent extreme pressure qualities. Keywords : Water-soluble metal working fluid, wear scar, four ball tester, 2-level factorial design Introduction Metal Working fluids principal functions are to accelerate heat dissipation with increased tool service life, lubrication between tool, chip and workpieice with reduced tool wear and improvement of the work piece surface finish. The fluids cool and lubricate the metal tool interface [1]. Metal working fluid requirements will be removal of heat, transport of metal chips and lubricate between tool and metal. Water soluble metal working fluids and Neat oils are two types of working fluid. The simple aqueous solutions provide excellent cooling but are not adequate for maintaining the good lubrication. Under such circumstances, a compromise is achieved by the use of soluble oils that consist of mineral oil together with EP compounds. These soluble oils function satisfactorily in most of the operations but their EP activities remain to a limited extent [3]. The main advantages of water-based fluids are that they resist the growth of microorganisms and the development of objectionable odor s. The functional additives contribute to the total composition which includes emulsification, corrosion inhibition, lubrication, microbial control, lubrication, pH buffering, coupling, defoaming, dispersing and wetting. In order to understand the effects of wear, researchers are able to understand the reaction of two moving surfaces between the metal working fluid and the material [4]. For minimizing the wear, the lubricant plays important role to increase the life time of mechanical components. Extreme Pressure (EP) additives such as sulphur, chloride and phosphorous actually form metal complexes with the metal surface at elevated temperatures. Any of the EP additives or in combination used in formulation of water soluble metal working fluids to impart good lubricity. Wear to the cutting edge is usually accompanied by rounding of the tools tip and permissible wear width is an indicator of tool service life [6]. For this paper, 5% of different water soluble metal working fluids employed to Four ball Tribotester, following the ASTM Standard D4172 [7]. The analyses were focused on the wear scar diameter and the results showed that having poor wear results have excellent extreme pressure qualities. The optimum value of mineral oil and phosphate esters were estimated by 2-level factorial design Level Factorial Design. 2-Level Factorial Design A 2-level factorial design with two factors have been used for this study. The factor considered here are concentration of mineral oil and phosphorous EP additives. The design points are shown Fig. 1 and values of independent variables at two levels are given in Table 1. Materials and Methods. The following section illustrates the experimental procedure and the materials and equipment required for this purpose Materials Chrome alloy steel standard balls as per AISIE-521000 of 12.7mm diameter, extra polish grade 25 of Rockwell C Hardness 64 – 66 HRC. Every test, new four balls were used. These balls were cleaned by using Acetone and wiped by fresh lint before starting the test. Water Soluble Metal Working Fluids The function of Metal working fluids are to aid the cutting and grinding operations with good finish and maintain the work piece quality by extending the life of machine tools. The chemical additives are used to formulate metal working fluid will contribute for stability, lubricity and microbial control. Water soluble metal working fluids with different mineral oil content such as 40%, 43%, 55%, 70% and 90% were defined as test candidates for the study to represent the entire performance bandwidth of the metal working fluids. The above concentrates are mixed with water at 5% concentration are for this test. Water soluble metal working fluid concentrates with 40% mineral oil content was subjected phosphorous EP Additives dosages with 0.01%, 0.02% and 0.03% for providing extreme pressure lubricity. These concentrates are diluted with water at 5% and conducted wear study as per ASTM D 4712. Apparatus Four-ball wear tester used for investigation of understanding the characteristics of lubricants. The above tester uses four balls. Three balls are firmly held in a ball pot which contains the lubricant to be tested and are pressed with one ball on the top. The top ball rotated at 1200 rpm on the three balls at the bottom. The four-ball tribotester machine TR-30L manufactured by Ducom India. This tester is used to measure the wear scar. The oil cup assembly, collect and the ball bearings are the important components shown in the figure 2. Before conducting the test, these components are cleaned with acetone. Test Procedures Steel ball bearings were placed in the ball pot assembly and tightened by using a torque wrench such that bottom steel balls prevented from moving during the testing. In the collector, the spinning ball at the top is locked and tightened onto the spindle. The test metal working fluid fed into the ball pot assembly. The assembly is installed into disc in the four ball machine. The test load of 392N (40 kg) applied slowly to avoid shock loading. The metal working fluid being tested was heated to 75oC by the tribotesters built-in heater. Set the drive motor to drive the top ball at 1200 rpm about one hour when the temperature reached. Oil cup assembly removed after one hour by switching off the heater. The metal working fluid under test drained from the oil cup. The steel balls were wiped by using lint free industrial wipe. The surface of the bearings was captured and wear scar measured by using microscope. Result and discussion With the special microscope, the wear scar diameters of bottom ball bearings were measured and the mean values were calculated. Table 3 shows the Mean Wear Scar. Mean wear scar diameter increases with the load gradually. The mineral oil content plays important role in wear and shown in Table 3 and figure 3 and it has been observed that wear scar value reduced with increase in mineral oil content in the water soluble metal working fluid concentrate. The relation between MWSD and MO content can be represented by the Equation 1 that has R2 = 0.9684 MWSD = 0.00003(MO)2 – 0.0081(MO) + 1.1257 (1) As our aim is to develop water based metal working fluid using minimum MO content. Further down, 40% mineral oil content concentrate taken for study and imparted with Phosphate additives and mean wear scar diameter found. It was observed by increasing the antiwear additive, the MSWD decreases as shown in Table 2. Data in Table 2 have been used to develop the 2-level factorial design. The surface and contour plot of this design are given in Fig. 4 and Fig. 5 respectively. The software MINITAB 15 was used for the 2-level factorial design and Table 4 and Table 5 represent the result of the analysis. The regression equation is given by Eqn.2. MWSD = 0.7075 0.0675xMO – 0.0575x PE + 0.0275 x MO x PE(2) The result of Analysis of Variance is given in Table 5. This table gives the value of various errors and the effect of various terms. The response MWSD have been optimized using the MINITAB 15 software. The study shows that 0.03% phosphate EP additive and 90% MO gives the best result of 0.61 within the experimental region. However, we are using 40% MO as discussed earlier. Therefore, the 40% MO and 0.03% phosphate EP additive gives the MWSD of 0.69. The optimum value can be calculated from the Fig. 4 and Fig. 5 based on the maximum allowable MO content. Conclusion The tribology behavior of different metal working fluids at load (392N) were evaluated by Four ball tribotester machine and the results were compared. From the results, it can be concluded as 1.From the observation of wear scar condition, all the metal working fluids show abrasive wear. Severe adhesive wear found only in metal working fluid where there is low mineral oil content and rest of the samples found good. 2.Phosphate esters containing metal working fluid tend to impart anti-wear property to metal working fluids and with increase in quantity will leads to instability. 3.There was the general tendency for the wear, as indicated by the increased scar diameter, to increase the extreme pressure properties were improved. 4.Incorporation of antiwear additives for mineral oil containing 90% water soluble working fluid leads to instability. 5.A combination of 40% MO and 0.03% phosphate EP additives can be used production of water based metal working fluid.

Challenges And How To Overcome Them Essay

Even during the most downtrodden of economic times and perhaps even more during those times, the dream of starting a new business venture burns brightly in many people’s minds. The advantages of having a small online business range from lower start-up costs than brick-and-mortar operations to more streamlined administration. But successfully running an online business is far from easy. The moment a business decides to enter the online world, the very first challenge is creating a reliable website. A good designer can accomplish this, but a high-quality website is more than just visual attraction; it should also function smoothly and be designed for carrying out business. So the first issue that we faced is lack of computer expertise. We needs to possess more than a basic knowledge of the Internet to do business online. Necessary skills include knowing how to set up a website for business purposes and how to market our business online. Instead of this, we had do observation or google searching and read for relevant article or teaching materials either technology resources or visitor engagement resources. Another issue is limitations of business types. Some types of businesses may not be suited for the Internet, particularly those products involve the use of the senses. For example, if the unique selling point of our product is its pleasant aroma. After we decides to selling snacks online we just realise that we are facing this problem.
